Crafty (2013)
Crafty from Taylor Johnson on Vimeo.
Completed as the Thesis film component of my MFA degree at Montana State University-Bozeman, Crafty represents the tip of visual iceberg in terms of director Taylor Johnson’s fascination with the American craft beer movement that has emerged over roughly the past three decades. The stories within this subculture are as endless as the ever-increasing varieties of beer, and Taylor hopes to capture as many as possible… stories that is. In some ways, Crafty acts as a sort of initial installment or “pilot” episode of sorts for Taylor’s continuing narration on craft beer. He chose to split the film between showcasing our local Bozeman Brewing Company and several vignettes highlighting the general science, history, and commerce behind the beverage. In Crafty, history, science, and society mix in the concoction of postmodern American craft beer culture.
